Closing her eyes for a second, Maggie took a deep breath and let it out slowly, feeling the tension leaving her body. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, she’d needed a few hours to relax, and listening to Charlie having fun made it all that much better. He’d already reeled in a couple of fish, and although she couldn’t hear what he and Taylor were talking about from where she was sitting on the beach, she knew guy talk when she saw it.

Their heads bent together, one dark and one light, she watched them; the strange feeling they’d finally found a home settled over her with the warmth she was beginning to associate with Taylor. Her son had never really had a father, and she’d refused to hope that a man would come along who would fulfill that role, not the way her life had been going. But seeing Taylor and Charlie together right then, she felt the flame of hope burst to life, igniting a longing that she’d long ago extinguished.

Slightly dizzy, a humming in her head, she took several deep breaths until she was clear-headed again. “You can’t be falling in love with him; that’s impossible. It was only a kiss. Stop acting like a love-starved teenager and get control of yourself. This is ridiculous,” she thought. “You don’t know what kind of man he is; you don’t know that he won’t use you and throw you away, then laugh at you behind your back.”

Sighing because she knew Taylor wasn’t that kind of man, she forced herself to stop thinking about him. She barely succeeded in making it five minutes when Charlie called. “Mom, you need to come and try this. It’s so much fun; I bet you can catch a fish if Taylor helps.”

“Come on, Maggie,” Taylor called. “I’ll even put the worm on the hook for you.”

They were both grinning at her when she reached them. Charlie shoved a pole in her hand and rapidly began explaining what she had to do. “Okay, slow down,” she said, laughing. “I think you’d better explain it again and go a little slower.”

When she finally tried to cast the pole, the hook went out about two yards, then plummeted to the water with a big splash. “Okay, that didn’t go quite as well as I planned,” she said, reeling it in. “What did I do wrong.”

“You have to snap your wrist, Mom,” Charlie said. “Try again; you’ll get it.”

But ten minutes later, all she’d managed to do was drown several worms, and she was sure the fish were floating out in the lake laughing at her. “I think we can all agree that it’s best to leave the fishing to you two,” she said, backing away from the water. “I think I’ll just go back and watch from my chair.”

Taylor handed his pole to Charlie. “Hold this for me, kiddo; maybe I can help your mom,” he said, then turned to her. “Come back here and try one more time.
